Origin and history

The idea of a royal square and a uniform facade of the docks along the Garonne gradually emerged. In 1729, the architect Jacques Gabriel proposed three projects, before building in 1731 the Quai de la Douane and its facades. This initial project, supported by intendant Claude Boucher, was validated in 1746 by the jurats of Bordeaux for the creation of a first quay.

When Boucher died, intendant Aubert de Tourny took over the project with Ange-Jacques Gabriel, son of Jacques Gabriel. In 1748, a monumental perspective was built, extending the Place Royale (now Place de la Bourse) towards the river. This homogeneous architectural order is characterized by a ground floor with arches in full hanger, two square floors and a Mansart attic, adorned with stone windows and carved motifs.

The facades, although partially altered (disappearance of some wrought iron balconies), retain their original character thanks to the preserved frames and larmies. The arcades on the ground floor, sometimes modified by the installation of shops, are part of a set classified as Historic Monument since 1951. The protection specifically concerns the facade and roof, including the return to the rue du quai Bourgeois.

This urban project illustrates Bordeaux's desire for modernization and beautification in the 18th century, marking a transition to a classical and monumental architecture. The architects Gabriel, father and son, played a central role, combining functionality (port quays) and aesthetic (harmony of facades).
