Origin and history

The idea of a royal square and a uniform façade along the banks of the Garonne in Bordeaux has gradually emerged. In 1729, the architect Jacques Gabriel proposed three projects, before building in 1731 the Quai de la Douane and its facades. This initial project, supported by intendant Claude Boucher, led in 1746 to the acceptance of the jurats for a first dock. After Boucher's death, his successor, Aubert de Tourny, took over the project with Ange-Jacques Gabriel, son of Jacques Gabriel.

In 1748, under the impulse of Tourny, a monumental perspective was built, extending the Place Royale (now Place de la Bourse) towards the river. This architectural ordinance is characterized by a ground floor and an arched entresol, topped by two square floors and a Mansard attic. The facades, although partially modified (disappearance of balconies or wrought iron supports), retain their original character thanks to their carved frames and larmies. The arcades, sometimes altered by the installation of shops, remain a testament to this ambitious urban project.

The building located at 12 quai Richelieu is part of this classified set. Its façade and roof were inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 14 April 1951. The style, marked by splits and carved arcade keys, illustrates the influence of Gabriel, the major architects of the 18th century, and Tourny's urban will to embellish Bordeaux.
