Facades and roofs: inscription by decree of 26 July 1947

Origin and history

The building located in the 8th Place du Docteur-Pierre-Walter in Bergheim (Haut-Rhin) is an iconic 18th-century civil building. Built in stone and stone, it has a split façade, three bays in the middle of the hanger on the ground floor, and two floors with windows decorated with segmental arch lintels. Its roof with long sections and broken rumps, as well as its skylights (some of which have been modified), illustrate the local architectural techniques of the period.

Inside, the ground floor vaulted in cradle and modern staircase contrast with the original structure. Ranked a historic monument in 1947 for its facades and roofs, this building reflects the Alsatian urbanism of the Enlightenment. At the rear, two outbuildings in masonry and wood, as well as a door on Rue de la Poudrière, testify to its mixed use (housing and ancillary activities).

The precise dating of the second half of the 18th century is suggested by stylistic features, such as carved hanger keys and slit-angle chains. Subsequent transformations (conversion of two doors to windows, addition of modern skylights) show a continuous adaptation of the building to the needs of its occupants, while preserving its historic character.
