Origin and history

The building, located at the corner of the island between Wilson Square and Victor-Hugo Square in Toulouse, is a 19th-century crossing building. It is part of a coherent architectural ensemble bordering Place Wilson, with five spans on this square, twenty-two on Rue du Rempart-Saint-Étienne and six on Place Victor-Hugo. Its facades, marked by arcades of shops and rectangular windows, reflect a rigorous neoclassical style, with cornices and balusters adorning the upper floors. A covered passage is accessible from the left span of Wilson Square.

The part overlooking Wilson Square was erected between 1824 and 1834 by architect Jacques-Pascal Virebent, then architect of the city. The elevations on Victor-Hugo Square and part of Rue du Rempart-Saint-Étienne were designed by Urban Vitry, Virebent's successor from 1830, according to an alignment plan dated 1832 and recorded in 1839. Vitry s The 18 right-hand spans of Rue du Rempart-Saint-Étienne, initially limited to the ground floor and the entresol, were raised by two floors after 1864 by architect Henri Bach, taking over the Vitry model.

The facades and roofs of the building, including its rear façade at 6 rue du Rempart-Villeneuve, were inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 20 August 1974. The building thus illustrates the architectural evolution of Toulouse in the 19th century, mixing neoclassical heritage and subsequent urban adaptations. The gondstones visible on some windows, typical of Vitry's constructions, as well as denticle bosses and cornices, highlight the richness of the ornamental details of this period.
