Origin and history
The Hotel de Rosières, located at Puy-en-Velay in Haute-Loire, is a monument whose origins date back to at least 1570. It preserves significant remains of the 16th century, such as an inner courtyard, an entrance door, a Renaissance fireplace armoried in the basements, and a small vaulted arched cabinet. Four gothic panels, integrated into a window of the courtyard, also testify to this period. The main building body, which is connected by a now beheaded corner turret, reflects this first phase of construction.
In the 17th century, the building underwent major changes: the entrance courtyard, initially opened between Rochetail and Polignac streets, was partially covered to support three floors. These upper levels feature typical features of the era, such as woodwork, French-style ceilings, small tiled windows and chimneys with pronounced mouldings. The facade and vaulted dogives have been protected since 1951, the date of their inscription in historical monuments.
The Hotel de Rosières thus illustrates the architectural evolution between Renaissance and classical era, mixing medieval heritage and Baroque adaptations. Its location in the heart of Puy-en-Velay, between the streets Cardinal-de-Polignac and Rochetail, makes it a privileged witness to the city's urban and social history, marked by its religious and administrative role in Auvergne.
