Origin and history
The building at 10 Chenebouterie Street, Puy-en-Velay, is a 16th-century building marked by major architectural changes. Originally, numbers 10 and 12 formed a single set, before being divided in 1614. Today, only the octagonal staircase turret, composed of 137 steps leading to an inner courtyard, remains. This turret, an emblematic element, is complemented by a gallery with warheads and exterior arches, connecting the two parts of the house.
The turret presents notable architectural details, such as a shield supported by two angels at its base, as well as wooden balusters turned in Louis XIII style on the third and fourth floors. These elements illustrate the influence of Renaissance and classical styles in the region. The building was partially protected by an order of 30 July 1951, specifically covering the stair turret and the galleries on courtyard, highlighting their heritage value.
The building is part of the urban context of Puy-en-Velay, the historic city of Auvergne, where 16th century civil architecture reflects both social developments and the construction techniques of the period. The division of the property in 1614 reflects changes in the use of domestic spaces, while the conservation of the turret and galleries offers an overview of local architectural practices, combining functionality and characteristic ornaments.
