Origin and history

The 16th century building in Puy-en-Velay illustrates Renaissance civil architecture. Organised around a crossing corridor, it gives access to an inner courtyard where an octagonal turret connects two bodies of buildings through a gallery under warheads. The facades, adorned with mascarons above the arches, keep carpentry and doors with period panels. The interior ceilings, although later (18th century), complement this testimony of the urban habitat of the time.

The protection of this building, inscribed by decree of 30 July 1951, specifically concerns its 16th century facade on courtyard. This type of construction reflects local architectural practices, combining functionality (access to the courtyard, traffic between buildings) and decoration (corns, mascarons). The precise address, 16 rue Chenebouterie, confirms its anchoring in the historical fabric of the city.

Puy-en-Velay, then episcopal and commercial city, saw the development of buildings combining housing and craft activities. These buildings, often organized around classes, facilitated collective life and exchanges. The turret and gallery, distinctive elements, underline the importance attached to traffic and light in these semi-public spaces.
