Origin and history

Hotel Legal de Nirande is an emblematic 16th-century building located at Puy-en-Velay, in the Haute-Loire department. This monument is characterized by remarkable Renaissance architecture, including its carved allegations and a warhead gallery connecting two building bodies. The central staircase turret, a structural element, illustrates the typical spatial organization of the mansions of that time. Stone decorations, such as moulded cartridges in fluted bundles or heraldic shields (including a fox with stars), bear witness to a refined artistic know-how.

The allegations of the court, adorned with plant motifs, mascarons and symbols such as a faith with their hands, were inscribed in historical monuments by order of 16 September 1949. These decorative elements, combined with the gallery on the second floor, constitute the building's main heritage interest. The carved stone, worked in volutes and rinceaux, reflects the influence of the artistic currents of the French Renaissance, adapted to the local context auvergnat.

The building is part of the historic urban fabric of Puy-en-Velay, a city marked by its medieval and reborn heritage. Although the sources do not explicitly mention its initial use (noble residence, bourgeois house, etc.), its architecture suggests a representative function, probably linked to the aristocracy or the local bourgeoisie. The accuracy of its location (17-18 rue Chenebouterie) and its partial inscription as historical monuments underline its importance in the built heritage of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
