Facades and roofs: inscription by order of 23 September 1949

Origin and history

The Hotel des Arcis de Chazourne is an iconic 16th-century building located in the town of Puy-en-Velay, Haute-Loire. This monument is distinguished by its facade on courtyard, adorned with a circular turret housing a staircase. This turret rests on each floor on canned Corinthian columns, reinforced by iron piles to avoid any bending. A second corbelled turret occupies another corner of the courtyard, connected by a glazed sky to a covered appendix, typical of Renaissance architecture.

The facades and roofs of this mansion were listed as historical monuments by an order of 23 September 1949. This classification reflects the heritage value of the building, both for its architecture and for its state of conservation. The exact address, 8 rue Courrerie (formerly 4), places this monument in the heart of the historic centre of Puy-en-Velay, a city marked by its medieval and reborn heritage.

The construction of this building reflects the architectural influences of the Renaissance in Auvergne, during which time the local elites, often enriched by commerce or administrative burdens, built urban homes combining comfort and prestige. Corinthian columns and turrets, decorative and functional elements, illustrate this desire to socially mark urban space. The Puy-en-Velay, then episcopal and commercial city, saw the development of an aristocratic or bourgeois habitat, distinct from the more modest dwellings of the population.
