Origin and history

Hotel Mellient is a mansion built in the 18th century, located at 7 rue Tournefort, in the city centre of Nantes. This building, representative of the civil architecture of its time, was registered as historical monuments by order of 19 March 1954. It is now part of a real estate complex housing the services of the Conseil départemental de la Loire-Atlantique, known as the "hotel of the department".

In the 20th century, the General Council gradually acquired the Hotel Mellient and the Hotel Urvoy de Saint-Bedan, a contiguous building located at the corner of the streets Tournefort and Argentré. Several projects envisaged in the 1970s initially provided for the partial or total destruction of these hotels, with the exception of the facades on the already protected Saint-André courtyard. However, in 1982, the departmental architect Paul Ferré decided to preserve part of the interior structures because of the heritage value of the decorations of the rooms.

The hotel Mellient thus illustrates the challenges of preserving the heritage of Nantes, between modernization of administrative infrastructures and preservation of historical elements. Its integration into the hotel of the department reflects a desire to reconcile contemporary functionality and 18th century heritage.

The protected elements of the Mellient Hotel specifically include the street façade and the corresponding roof, as specified in the 1954 registration order. Today, the building participates in the local institutional life while remaining a notable example of the Nantes heritage.
