Origin and history

The building located at 55 rue des Ponts in Nancy, built in the 2nd quarter of the 20th century, was acquired in the 1930s by the Jewish cultural and cultural association of Polish rite. This place became a community space marked by its religious and cultural identity, reflecting the history of Jewish migration in Lorraine.

After World War II, the building was renovated to accommodate artistic works. Mané-Katz, a painter of Ukrainian origin who lived mostly in France, made three murals representing musicians. These frescoes, rare examples of his art preserved in France, illustrate his attachment to the musical and religious themes, while symbolizing the cultural renewal of the Nemandian Jewish community.

Since 2005, Mané-Katz's mural and the north wall of the meeting room that supports it have been protected under the Historic Monuments. The building remains today the property of the cult association, perpetuating its role as a place of memory and culture for the Israelite community of Nancy.
