Stone frame of a window on the first floor: inscription by order of 17 July 1939
Origin and history
The building located in Toul, in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle in the Grand Est region, dates from the 14th century. This building, although partially documented, is representative of the medieval civil architecture of the city. Its most remarkable element is a stone frame of a window on the first floor, protected by a decree of inscription under the title of Historical Monuments since 17 July 1939.
This frame illustrates the typical size and ornamentation techniques of the Gothic period in Lorraine. The location of the building, initially recorded at 1 rue Rigny (formerly 3) and approximately 37 rue Michatel, reflects the evolution of the Toulouse urban fabric. The accuracy of its location is considered "passable" (note 5/10), suggesting uncertainties about its exact location or subsequent changes to the plot.
In medieval times, Toul, an episcopal city and stronghold, concentrated intense artisanal and commercial activity. Buildings such as this one served as both a dwelling, a workshop or a place of exchange, participating in the economic and social life of the city. Their preservation provides an overview of the 14th century's constructive lifestyles and know-how.
