Street facade including wrought iron balconies: inscription by decree of 13 April 1928

Origin and history

The building at 2 rue La Vrillière, in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, dates from the last quarter of the 17th century. This building, representative of the Parisian civil architecture of the period, is distinguished by its facade decorated with wrought iron balconies, typical elements of the Louis XIV style. These decorative details, both functional and aesthetic, illustrate the evolution of craft techniques and the taste for ornamentation during the reign of the Sun King.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of 13 April 1928, the building enjoys specific protection for its street façade, including balconies. This inscription reflects the desire to preserve the Parisian architectural heritage of the 17th and 18th centuries, during which time the capital affirmed itself as a major political, cultural and artistic centre in Europe. The location of the building in a central district also reflects the growing urbanization of Paris at that time, marked by the construction of private hotels and bourgeois residences.

Available data, including data from the Merimée database and Monumentum, highlight the importance of this building in the historic Parisian landscape. Although the archives do not mention specific characters or events related to this building, its preservation offers a material testimony of the urban transformations and lifestyles of the aristocracy and bourgeoisie under the Old Regime. The accuracy of its location, assessed as "a priori satisfactory", makes it possible to situate its location with relative accuracy, in the heart of a neighbourhood today marked by its architectural heritage.
