The façade and roof on the wharf (Box 04: 04 AV 114): inscription by decree of 4 July 1988

Origin and history

The building located at 30-32 quai d'Orléans, in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, is an emblematic building of the island of Saint-Louis, built in the 17th century. This neighborhood, urbanized under the reign of Louis XIII and Louis XIV, illustrates the bourgeois residential architecture of the period, with its private hotels and buildings related to harmonious facades. The island Saint-Louis, originally called Île Notre-Dame before being renamed in honor of the king, became a popular place by the aristocracy and the upper Parisian bourgeoisie, attracted by its peaceful setting and proximity to the royal power.

The protection of this building, by order of 4 July 1988, specifically concerns its facade and roof overlooking the wharf in Orléans. This inscription under the title of Historic Monuments highlights the heritage value of its architecture, typical of the classic French style of the seventeenth century. The quay in Orléans, bordering the Seine, was at the time a privileged place of residence, where business, crafts and social life were mixed. Today, the building bears witness to this story, although its current access and uses (visit, rental) are not specified in the available sources.

The administrative coordinates of the building, recorded in the Mérimée base, confirm its anchoring in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, with an approximate location at 28 quai d'Orléans according to GPS data. The accuracy of this location is estimated to be "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), reflecting the limitations of cartographic tools for older buildings. No information is available on any historic owners, architects or significant events related to this building, other than its protection in 1988.
