Facade and roof on street (Box 05: 04 BQ 57): inscription by order of 16 July 1984
Origin and history
The building at 6 rue du Fouarre, in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, dates from the 4th quarter of the 19th century. This building illustrates the civil architecture of the end of the century, a period marked by the urban transformation of Paris under the influence of the major Haussmannian works, although its construction was after that time. Its facade and roof, protected by a decree of inscription of 16 July 1984, testify to architectural styles in vogue at this time, often mixing eclecticism and classic references.
The location of this building, in the Latin Quarter, a historical and intellectual sector of Paris, suggests its integration into a dense and culturally rich urban fabric. By the end of the 19th century, the 5th arrondissement already housed prestigious institutions such as the Sorbonne, attracting students, professors and a literate bourgeoisie. The buildings of that time often served as housing for these elites, while participating in the beautification of the city, in accordance with the aesthetic and hygienist norms of the time.
The inscription of the façade and roof as part of the Historic Monuments in 1984 underscores the heritage value of this building. This partial protection, limited to elements visible from the street, reflects a desire to preserve the architectural character of the neighbourhood without unduly forcing the owners. Today, the building remains a private property, without any indication of its accessibility to the public or any particular tourist or residential vocation.
