The two 18th-century wrought iron staircase ramps: inscription by decree of 31 March 1926

Origin and history

The building at 21 rue de Sèvres, in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, dates from the 18th century. This building is distinguished by its two wrought iron staircase ramps, typical of the craft of this time. These architectural elements were protected by an order of 31 March 1926, granting them the status of Historic Monument.

The 1926 classification highlights the heritage value of ramps, representative of the ironmaking know-how of the 18th century in Paris. Although little information is available on the overall history of the building, its location in a central district of Paris and its architecture bear witness to the urban planning of the Ancien Régime.

At that time, the 6th arrondissement, then in the midst of a transformation, was home to an affluent population and skilled craftsmen. Buildings like this were used both as bourgeois residences and as workshops, reflecting the social and functional mix of Paris neighbourhoods before the Revolution. Their preservation now allows us to study the evolution of construction techniques and urban lifestyles under Louis XV and Louis XVI.
