Origin and history
The building located at 1 avenue Charles-Floquet in the 7th arrondissement of Paris was built between 1904 and 1911 by architects Pierre and M. Humbert for Jean-Charles Chantrell. This building, erected during the piercing of Charles-Floquet Avenue, is inspired by Palladian architecture. Its interior is distinguished by a polychrome marble decor and an elliptical staircase illuminated by a zenithal light well.
During the Second World War, the building housed the services of Radio-Paris under occupation. Since 1963, it has hosted the Delegation for Regional Planning and Action (DATAR). Its interior, including the decoration and staircase, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 2 August 1994, highlighting its heritage value.
The building illustrates the eclectic architectural style of the early 20th century in Paris, combining classical references and technical innovations. Its history also reflects the urban and political changes of the capital, from the Belle Époque to the post-war period, as well as its media role during the occupation.
