Origin and history

The Prévot building is an emblematic building in Cayenne, French Guiana, built during the 19th century. This building, whose architecture reflects the colonial influences of the time, was preserved for its heritage interest. Its inscription as a historical monument by decree of 26 November 1992 underlines its cultural and architectural value in the Guyanese context.

Located at 14 Léopold-Heder Avenue, the Prévot building includes not only its exterior and interior structure, but also the plots forming its courtyard. This extensive protection reflects the importance attached to the conservation of the entire site, providing an overview of urban planning and lifestyle in Cayenne during the 19th century. The location, noted with average accuracy (level 5/10), remains a reference point in the built heritage of the city.

The 19th century in Guyana was marked by an economy centered on plantations, logging and, later, the beginning of mining activity. Buildings such as Prévot often served as residences for wealthy families or colonial administrators, playing a role in the social and urban structure of Cayenne. Their preservation makes it possible today to study the architectural and social dynamics of this pivotal period.
