Origin and history
The building located at 35 rue des Chaussetiers in Clermont-Ferrand dates back to the 16th century, but its façade and decor were completely redone in 1731, as evidenced by an inscription. This 18th-century remodeling masks an older building, organized around an inner courtyard and served by an original screw staircase. The entrance door, in ironwork, bears the cross with double crusillon, symbol of the cathedral chapter which probably owned this building, or even part of the neighborhood.
The 18th century facade is distinguished by the quality of its ironwork, especially above the third door, where volutes, symmetrical pistils and a central key-shaped motif surrounded by a vine stock fit into an oval. This decoration is surmounted by the double cross of the chapter, confirming its link with the religious institution. Inside, a straight flight staircase with core wall, added in the eighteenth century, completes the staircase in medieval screw.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of 23 March 1990, the building specifically protects its facade on street, door and its iron imposte. These elements testify to both the civil architecture of the Clermont and the influence of the cathedral chapter in local urban planning. The accuracy of its location remains poor (level 5/10), but its official address is confirmed by the Merimée base.
