Entrance gate on street with its vantals and covered passage with its grid (Box HZ 46): registration by order of 23 March 1990
Origin and history
The building at 29 Pascal Street in Clermont-Ferrand is an 18th century architectural testimony, marked by a rare rock style in the region. Its most remarkable element is its covered entrance passage, a unique arrangement in Clermont-Ferrand. This passage consists of a wooden portal with two asymmetrical vantals, decorated with motifs such as shells and volutes inscribed in hearts, surmounted by an openworked eardrum of a central rosette. The whole is part of a classic box with bosses and curved platform, reflecting the influence of the artistic currents of the time.
The covered passage itself is structured in two parts: a first vault in a cradle, followed by a arched arch. It is closed on the courtyard side by a two-sided iron gate, doubling the gate on the street. This grid, like the portal, has been one of the elements protected by registration under the Historic Monuments since 23 March 1990. The ensemble illustrates a technical and aesthetic mastery characteristic of the eighteenth century, while stressing the originality of this building in the Clermontian heritage.
The inscription under the title of Historical Monuments specifically concerns the entrance gate with its vantals and the covered passage with its grid, as evidenced by the protection decree of 1990. Although the exact address is 29 rue Blaise Pascal, the sources mention an approximate location, with an accuracy deemed mediocre (note 5/10). This building remains a notable example of the civil architecture of the time, mixing functionality and decoration in a dense urban space.
