Origin and history
The building at 20bis rue Fontgiève in Clermont-Ferrand, built around 1880, illustrates the architectural style of the late 19th century. Its attribution to architect Tachet is based on recurrent stylistic elements: arches in the middle of a hanger decorated with human-headed staples, roses, ground chambranles, and toothed cornice. The main facade, six-span, organizes between courtyard and garden, while the skylights form a pyramidal composition, the power stations being raised by a damping.
The entrance hall and stairwell have an exceptional ornamentation, with canned columns of Volvic stone, cariatids supporting the ceiling, and stencil paintings compartmentalizing the walls. The niches of the entrance house two statues in full-size cast iron, representing a shepherd and a drum dancer. These details, as well as the garden fence, have been protected since the building was listed as a Historic Monument in 1992.
The building reflects the influence of Tachet, a local architect whose achievements mark Clermont-Ferrand with their eclectic and decorative richness. The combination of materials (Volvic stone, cast iron) and motifs (volutes, denticles) testifies to an aesthetic research characteristic of the industrial bourgeoisie of the period, concerned with prestige and architectural innovation.
