Internal courtyard with its stairway in loggias (Box IP 189): inscription by order of 14 May 1992
Origin and history
The building at 30 rue des Petits-Gras in Clermont-Ferrand, dated 1629, illustrates the civil architecture of the first half of the seventeenth century. Its particularity lies in its closed courtyard, accessible from the street, where a stone wall staircase serves the floors. Each landing opens onto a loggia in low arches, adorned with curved square balusters, an original design that stands out from the usual straight models in Clermont.
The courtyard with open galleries, characteristic of the city in the 17th century, is bounded by arches equipped with key and prominent imposte. A full table, placed at the right of the central key, separates the balustrade into two symmetrical parts. These architectural elements, such as stairs and loggias, were protected by a historic monuments registration order on 14 May 1992, highlighting their heritage value.
The exact address, 30 rue des Petits-Gras, is IP 189. Although the GPS location is approximate (noted 5/10 in detail), the building remains a rare testimony of the Clermont urban planning of the modern era, where the inner courtyards played a central role in the organisation of bourgeois or artisanal dwellings.
