16th Century Gate on Courtyard: Registration by Order of 13 March 1945

Origin and history

Hotel Legras du Luart is a building located in the city of Le Mans, in the Sarthe department, in the Pays de la Loire region. This monument is particularly remarkable for its 16th century portal, which overlooks an inner courtyard. This portal is the only element currently protected by historical monuments, which was officially registered by ministerial decree on 13 March 1945.

The building is part of the architectural heritage of Le Mans, a city marked by a rich medieval and reborn past. Although the available information did not specify the original use of the hotel, the buildings of that time often served as residences for wealthy families or local notables. The portal, typical of Renaissance civil architecture, bears witness to the importance attached to aesthetics and social symbolism through decorative and structural elements.

The location of the hotel on the Grande-Rue au Mans suggests a central position in the city, probably linked to commercial or administrative activities. During the Renaissance, cities such as Le Mans experienced economic and cultural growth, with the development of trade and the emergence of a trading bourgeoisie. Private hotels, such as the Legras du Luart, reflected this dynamism by their careful architecture and strategic location.
