Origin and history

The building located at No. 2 on Rue du Château in Fontainebleau is an emblematic building in the city centre, at the corner of Place d'Armes. Built in an architectural style typical of the region, it is distinguished by its structure on four levels and its three spans on the Rue du Château side. Its façade and roof, overlooking the Place d'Armes, were partially listed as historical monuments on October 7, 1931, recognizing their heritage value.

In February 2023, the urban artist Invader, known for his project Space Invaders, placed a mosaic representing a castle (code: FTBL 04) on the façade on the Rue du Château side. This contemporary intervention adds a modern artistic dimension to this historic building, while being part of the cultural landscape of Fontainebleau, a city marked by its architectural heritage and royal history.

The building is attached to other classified buildings, such as those of Nos 3, 11 and 11bis of Place d'Armes, stressing the importance of this area in the historical fabric of the city. Although private property, its heritage protection makes it a key part of the urban landscape of Fontainebleau, Seine-et-Marne, within the Île-de-France region. Data from the Merimée database confirm its exact address and legal status, while noting an approximate geographical location (estimated at 5/10).
