Origin and history
The building located at 56 boulevard du Docteur-Benet in Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val (Tarn-et-Garonne) dates from the 14th century. He is best known for sheltering a marble bas-relief fragment in his façade. The latter represented a juvenile head with wavy hair, evoking a solar divinity, with traces of an architectural decoration at the back. Although the work seemed crude, reminiscent of the ancient sarcophagi of the low period, it was long misidentified as a medieval capital.
The bas-relief, called "gallo-roman", was inscribed in historical monuments by order of 7 November 1927. However, this protection was repealed on 24 March 2014, after the object was deposited and given to the city's communal museum more than 30 years ago. Since then, the fragment has disappeared from the collections, without its exact fate being documented. The exact address of the building, although mentioned in the Merimée bases, has an approximate location (noted 5/10 precisely).
No information is available on the current use of the building (visit, rental, etc.), or on any other heritage features that it may host. Sources are limited to Monumentum data and internal archives, without further detail on its architectural history or owners. The initial confusion around the nature of bas-relief (gallo-roman vs medieval) illustrates the challenges of attribution for objects reused in later constructions.
