Origin and history
The building in Albi, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, is distinguished by its staircase tower built on a square plane. This architectural element, made of brick and stone, was probably part of a larger ensemble. The old windows still visible and the transformations undergone in the seventeenth century testify to its evolution over the centuries. The tower incorporates carved details, such as the support consoles, and an exterior stone staircase leading to the interior.
Inside, a spiral staircase serves the first two floors, while a second helical staircase, housed in a pendant-mounted scald, provides access to an upper room and the terrace. The ceiling of the staircase has a false rounded silt, contrasting with the straight steps cut in redents. These technical and aesthetic features reflect the know-how of the time, mixing functionality and ornaments.
Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 27 June 1944, the stair tower (outdoor and internal) constitutes the protected element of this building. Its official address, Place du Vigan in Albi, and its Insee code (81004) place it in the department of Tarn, in the Occitanie region. The approximate GPS location points to the street of the Town Hall, although the accuracy is considered mediocre (note 5/10).
