Origin and history

The Hotel du Comte de Saint-Maur is a private hotel built in 1805 in Castres, Tarn, by François Prudhomme de Saint-Maur. This iconic Empire-style building is distinguished by its richly decorated facade: columns and capital windows, architrave, triangular frontons, and crowned cornices with modillons. The ground floor alternates curved bays adorned with blazons and rectangular bays, while a covered terrace with a denticle tree extends the floor.

The building was marked by the birth, on February 9, 1846, of Arthur Batut, inventor of automatic aerial photography by kite (cervolism). This place, witness to the technical innovation of the 19th century, retains an architecture of Greco-Roman influence, characteristic of the First Empire. Since 28 November 1960, it has been listed as a building, protecting its facades, roofs and terrace.

Located at 42 rue Villegoudou, the hotel illustrates the aristocratic heritage of Castres, mixing local history and architectural heritage. Its state of conservation and its stylistic details make it a remarkable example of the noble residences of the Napoleonic era in Occitanie.
