Facade and roof: inscription by order of 1 February 1934

Origin and history

The building located in Avignon, in the department of Vaucluse (region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur), is a historical monument whose protected elements – facade and roof – were inscribed by ministerial decree in 1934. Its official address, 18 quay of the Line, corresponds to an area close to the old city walls, now partially modified or disappeared.

This building was destroyed during the operations to clear the ramparts of Avignon, works probably aimed at modernizing or securing this urban area. Available sources, such as the Merimée and Monumentum database, indicate an approximate location, with a map accuracy considered "passable" (note 5/10). No further information is provided on its original use or architecture.

The administrative data clearly relate to the commune of Avignon (code Insee 84007) and to the department of Vaucluse [84]. Despite its destruction, its inscription in the title of Historical Monuments bears witness to its historical importance, linked to the urban and defensive history of the city of popes.
