Origin and history

The building at 11 Avenue de la Liberté in Cayenne is an emblematic example of the Creole architecture of the early twentieth century. Built on three levels, it is distinguished by a hard ground floor and two floors entirely wooden, with characteristic balconies. This style reflects local adaptations to climatic constraints and materials available in French Guiana at that time.

The house was built for Albert Darnal, a prominent figure in Cayenne life, successively acting as a lawyer, a justice of the peace, and then mayor of Cayenne. Its registration as a Historic Monument by decree of 31 August 1995 underlines its heritage value, including also the building of the communes (cadastre AC 471). The approximate location, noted as "passable" (level 5/10), corresponds to the Chinese district of Cayenne.

The architecture of this building illustrates the influence of Creole traditions in Guyana's early twentieth century urban planning. The stilt houses, wooden persian trees and large balconies were designed to promote air circulation, essential in a humid tropical climate. These elements, combined with the use of local materials, demonstrate know-how adapted to the environmental and cultural specificities of the region.
