Origin and history

The building at 31 rue du Lieutenant-Goinet in Cayenne dates from the 4th quarter of the 19th century. It illustrates the bourgeois architecture of this period, marked by the creation of the General Council of Guyana under the Third Republic. This political context coincides with the gold rush, which generates local fortunes and stimulates the construction of large urban dwellings.

The building, including its courtyard and commons, was listed in the Historical Monuments by order of 16 August 1995. Its location, between official addresses and GPS (81 Christopher Columbus Street), reflects the challenges of precise location in an evolving urban fabric. The current mapping accuracy is considered "passable" (note 5/10), highlighting the limitations of available geolocation data.

This heritage bears witness to Cayenne's economic and social history at the end of the 19th century. The discovery of gold then attracts an elite who invests in prestigious residences, symbols of their new status. These buildings become markers of the urbanization and social stratification of the period, in a city undergoing transformation under the influence of mining resources and republican reforms.
