Origin and history

The building in Mana, Guyana, dates back to the 19th century and was modified in the early 20th century. It is part of the history of the village of Mana, founded in 1828 during the period of gold research that marked the urban and economic development of the region. This building, typical of the local architecture of the time, reflects the adaptations related to gold mining and the growing needs of the population.

The original house, built in the 19th century, was raised in 1939, illustrating an architectural and functional evolution. This type of transformation was common in Guyanese villages, where buildings had to adapt to climatic constraints, dominant economic activities (such as gold-making), and population growth. The building, including the courtyard and its facilities, was listed as a Historic Monument by order of 16 August 1995, emphasizing its heritage importance.

The historical context of Mana is closely related to gold mining, which attracted diverse populations and shaped the social and spatial organization of the town. The buildings of this period were often used as housing, shops or administrative premises, playing a central role in community life. Their preservation makes it possible today to understand the economic and cultural dynamics of Guyana in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
