Facades and roofs of arcade houses: inscription by decree of 28 January 1944

Origin and history

The buildings located 2-8 Place du Marché-Neuf in Saint-Germain-en-Laye have a remarkable architectural unit on their main façade, in accordance with strict specifications. However, their returns to adjacent streets, including Rue de Poissy, reveal notable stylistic differences. This street is decorated with ionic pilasters and Tuscan columns, adding a classic and varied dimension to the whole. These elements suggest an ambitious conception, potentially linked to the displacement of the local cemetery in the 1770s, although the works were officially adjudicated only in the year II of the French Revolution (1793-1794).

The history of these buildings illustrates a complex chronology: if their planning could go back to the 1770s, their realization spanned several decades. In fact, the auction of parcels took place only in the year II, and in 1820 some of them (lots 113 and 114) were still not built. This slow pace may reflect the political and economic upheavals of the revolutionary and post-revolutionary period, which may have delayed urban projects.

The facades and roofs of these arcade houses were finally protected by a registration order under the Historical Monuments on 28 January 1944. This official recognition underscores their heritage value, both for their architectural coherence and for their testimony to the urban transformations of Saint-Germain-en-Laye between the 18th and 19th centuries. Their location on the Place du Marché-Neuf, a central area of the city, reinforces their importance in the local historical landscape.
