Origin and history

The buildings at numbers 16, 18 and 20 of rue de Gramont, in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris, date from the last quarter of the 18th century. Their construction is part of a period of urban transformation marked by the emergence of a refined civil architecture, reflecting the tastes of the rising bourgeoisie and the aristocracy under the Old Regime. These buildings, now classified, bear witness to the stylistic evolutions of the period, between late classicism and first neoclassical influences.

The facades and street roofs of these buildings were included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by an order of 11 August 1975. This protection recognizes their heritage value, particularly for their characteristic representation of the Parisian habitat of the late eighteenth century. The precise location, confirmed by GPS coordinates and Merimée bases, places these buildings in the heart of a historic district, close to the major development axes of the capital.

The rue de Gramont, like other arteries in the 2nd arrondissement, was at that time a popular place of residence, close to the centres of economic and political power. The buildings of this period were often designed to house both bourgeois housing and commercial or craft activities, reflecting the social and functional mix of Paris neighbourhoods before the Revolution. Their preservation makes it possible today to study the lifestyles and spatial organization of the city on the eve of the great upheavals of the nineteenth century.
