Facades and roofs: inscription by order of 1 February 1934
Origin and history
The buildings in Avignon, 7-8 quai de la Ligne, are a vestige of the local architectural heritage. Their particularity lies in their proximity to the old city walls, now partly disappeared. These buildings were partially destroyed during the clearing of the fortifications, a routine urban operation in the 20th century to modernize historic city centres. Their facades and roofs, recognized for their heritage value, were officially protected by a decree of 1 February 1934, listing them in the inventory of Historic Monuments.
The location of these buildings, at the precise address of 7-8 quai de la Ligne (or approximately 8 Rue Rempart de la Ligne), reflects their integration into the medieval and modern urban fabric of Avignon. Their partial destruction is part of a broader dynamic of transformation of French cities, where ramparts, once essential for defence, have become obstacles to expansion and traffic. Today, their trace remains mainly through archives and legal protections, offering a fragmentary testimony of the Avignon urban history.
Code Insee 84007 confirms their anchoring in the commune of Avignon, Vaucluse department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. This area, marked by a rich medieval past and a lasting papal influence, preserves many classified buildings. However, practical information on current access to these buildings (visit, use) is not available, limiting knowledge of their state or contemporary function.
