Facades and roofs: inscription by order of 1 February 1934

Origin and history

The buildings located at 11-12 quai de la Ligne in Avignon (Vaucluse) constituted an architectural complex recognized as a Historic Monument. Their protection specifically concerned facades and roofs, which were officially registered by ministerial decree on 1 February 1934. However, these buildings disappeared during the operations to clear the city walls, an urban project having changed the local historical landscape.

The location of these buildings, initially located at the precise address of the wharf of the Line, is now approximate, with a cartographic accuracy considered fair (note 5/10). The current GPS coordinates suggest the 58 boulevard de la Ligne, reflecting the transformations of the Avignon urban fabric. No information is available on their past use (housing, commerce, etc.) or their integration into the daily life of the city.

Available sources (Merimée database, Monumentum) do not mention owners, architects, or the precise circumstances of their destruction. Only the administrative trace of their protection remains, stressing the heritage importance of these facades before their disappearance. Their history is part of the broader urban change of Avignon, where modernisation and preservation of the old building have often been in tension.
