The three carved poles depending on the two buildings (see AH 408, 409): inscription by order of 29 October 1971

Origin and history

The buildings at 1 and 3 rue du Loquet in Joigny (Yonne) date from the 15th century. Their particularity lies in three carved poles, elements protected and inscribed in the Historical Monuments by decree of 29 October 1971. These architectural elements, though partial, illustrate the artisanal know-how of the medieval period in a then dynamic city, located on important commercial axes in Burgundy.

The location of these buildings, in the historic centre of Joigny, reflects the typical urban planning of the Burgundy towns of the Middle Ages. At that time, the civil buildings of wood or stone were used as much for housing as for artisanal or commercial activities. The carved poles, often integrated with facades or interior structures, could have both decorative and bearer functions, marking the social status of the owners or the vocation of the building.

The 1971 listing of Historic Monuments underscores the heritage value of these elements, despite their partial condition. The accuracy of their location is considered "passable" (note 5/10), which may indicate uncertainties about their exact location or integrity. No information is available on their current accessibility to the public or their contemporary use.
