Origin and history

The Jouques hydropower plant is part of EDF's extensive project to develop the Durance and Verdon basins in the 1950s. Designed by architect Jean Crozet, it was commissioned in 1959. Its industrial architecture is distinguished by a "roof opening" system and an external 120-ton portico, allowing optimal maintenance of the equipment.

The plant houses three Kaplan turbines, three three-phase alternators and three transformers, illustrating the technological advances of the time. Integrated into the landscape, it is backed by relief and is one of the 22 plants built in this framework. Its exterior trimmings and portico have been protected since 1989, highlighting its heritage importance.

This plant reflects the post-war national energy modernization effort, combining technical innovation and architectural integration. Owned by EDF, it also symbolizes the key role of hydropower in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d的Azur region, where water resources have been exploited to meet growing electricity needs.
