Gallo-Roman establishment (vestiges) (Cases B 167-171) : entry by order of 3 November 1988

Origin and history

The Gallo-Roman settlement of Val de Millières is an archaeological site located in the commune of Urville, in the Aube department, in the Grand Est region. This site, dated from the Gallo-Roman period, was partially discovered during excavations covering about 500 m2. The remains discovered include two buildings surrounding a courtyard, typical of the agricultural or domestic structures of that time. These elements provide an overview of the spatial organization and daily activities of the inhabitants of the area under Roman rule.

The excavations confirmed the importance of this site as evidence of the Gallo-Roman occupation in the Aube region. The establishment was registered as historic monuments by order of November 3, 1988, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Protected remains, located in plots B 167 to 171 of the cadastre, include Gallo-Roman structures still visible. This ranking highlights the historical and archaeological interest of the site, although its precise location remains approximate according to available sources.

In the Gallo-Roman era, the Aube region, like other territories under Roman influence, was marked by a rural organization structured around villa (agricultural estates) and small settlements. These sites played a key role in the local economy, based on agriculture, crafts and trade. The establishment of the Val de Millières is part of this context, illustrating the daily life and constructive practices of the time, without specific details of its occupants or its exact use being mentioned in the current sources.
