Origin and history

The Ivan-Tourgueniev Museum is housed in a dacha built in the late 1870s by Russian writer Ivan Tourgueniev in Bougival (Yvelines). He lived there during the summers and autumns of 1875 until his death in 1883, producing major works such as Virgin Lands and his Poems in Prose. The house became a meeting place for literary and artistic figures, including Zola, Daudet, Flaubert, and composers Saint-Saëns and Fauré. Tourgenev also translated The legend of Saint Julien the Hospitalier de Flaubert in 1876.

Threatened by destruction in the 1970s, the dacha was saved by Alexander Zvighilsky, president of the Association of Friends of Ivan Tourgueniev (ATVM), who obtained his ranking in the Inventory of Historic Monuments in 1980. The museum officially opened on September 3, 1983, the centenary of the death of the writer, in the presence of Claude Cheysson and the ambassador of USSR. The site preserves 245 pieces related to Tourgueniev, including its classified piano-forte, as well as reconstructions of its work and bedroom.

In 2009, a Human Rights Hall was added to highlight its humanist commitment, such as its role in the liberation of 50 million serfs in Russia. The museum, managed since 2021 by a new ATVM team in partnership with the city of Bougival, received the Maison d'Illustrre label in 2022. It participates in European Heritage Days and offers visits by appointment in winter, reserved for researchers and groups.

The dacha, classified for its facades, roofs and interior decorations (1983 and 2020), illustrates the Franco-Russian cultural ties of the 19th century. The adjacent Viardot Pavilion, associated with the singer Pauline Viardot, completes this place dedicated to the memory of Tourgueniev and its intellectual circle.
