Origin and history
The Jacquemart Tower of Romans-sur-Isère is an iconic monument located in the commune of Romans-sur-Isère, in the Drôme department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built between the 12th and 15th centuries, this tower is distinguished by the presence of a jacquemart, a hammering automaton that sounds the hours, a particularity that it shares with other similar towers in France, such as that of Moulins in the Allier. It has been classified as a Historic Monument since 1963, reflecting its heritage and architectural importance.
The Jacquemart Tower is located in Jacquemart Square, in the heart of Romans-sur-Isère, and belongs to the municipality. Its listing in the inventory of Historical Monuments, by decree of 11 March 1963, specifically protects the structure of the tower (cadastre C 997). Although the available sources do not specify its current use (visit, rental, accommodation), its historical role was probably linked to the signposting of time for the inhabitants, a central element in medieval and reborn urban life.
The jacquemart towers, like the one of Romans-sur-Isère, were often symbols of prosperity and community organization in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. These automatons, in addition to their practical function, marked the identity of cities and reflected their technological advances. In the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, where Romans-sur-Isère is registered, these monuments were integrated into a network of dynamic cities, often linked to commerce, crafts or religious activities. The presence of the Jacquemart Tower thus illustrates the importance of Romans-sur-Isère in this regional context.
