Origin and history

The Jacques-Gabriel Bridge is an emblematic work of Blois, built in the early eighteenth century to replace a collapsed medieval bridge in February 1716. Conferred to the architect Jacques Gabriel by the Duke Philippe d'Orléans, regent of Louis XV, his construction mobilized 600 soldiers from the Piedmont regiment as early as August 1716. Inaugurated in 1724 after seven years of work, it became the first major public work of the reign of Louis XV, marked by a central pyramid of 14,60 m and a commemorative plaque in Latin.

Over the centuries, the bridge was destroyed by conflicts. In 1793, the revolutionaries blew up an arch to counter the Vendéens, then restored it in 1803. In 1870 an arch was dynamited in the face of the Prussian invasion, and in 1940-44 the central arches were destroyed by the French and then the Germans. Reconstructed in 1948, it preserves three original arches and remains a symbol of resilience, classified as a historical monument in 1937.

Architecturally unique, this tuffed donkey bridge (local stone) is 283 m long with 11 arches. He resisted all the floods of the Loire since 1724, thanks to his robust pillars. Originally equipped with rails for the tramway (1910-1933), it was renovated in 2016 with two pedestrian sidewalks. A plaque opened in 1989 summarizes its turbulent history, while its restored pyramid still dominates the river.

The bridge also embodies French political tensions: the 1786 plaque, which was hammered in 1793, was rewritten in 1804 to glorify Napoleon, and then modified in 1814 to erase his name. In 1805, a draft statue of the Emperor aborted. These historical strata make it a witness to successive regimes, from monarchy to liberation.

Today, the Jacques-Gabriel bridge remains a major axis of Blois, connecting the right bank (centre-city) with the left bank (Vienna quarter). Its obelisk, cross and girouette, restored in 2006 with a golden gilding, make it a utilitarian and symbolic monument, celebrated for its longevity and its role in local history.
