Origin and history
The coastal Botanical Garden of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, formerly known as Paul-Jovet, extends 2.5 hectares along the cliff, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in Archilua. This site highlights local biodiversity: coastal moors, dunes, forests and wetlands, while integrating thematic collections such as a botanical maze or useful plants. Its landscape and educational approach makes it a key tool to raise awareness of the preservation of coastal ecosystems.
The garden pays tribute to Paul Jovet (1896–1991), botanist and phytosociologist, student of Gaston Bonnier, who marked the study of plants by his work on climax and historical influence on species. Managed by the town hall of Saint-Jean-de-Luz according to natural methods, it combines ecological restoration, environmental management and educational activities. The themes discussed – biodiversity, waste management, sustainable food – are part of contemporary sustainable development issues.
The garden is designed for the general public and schools to explore the interactions between humans and natural environments. Its collections (plants of five continents, utility squares) illustrate plant diversity, while its missions include the protection of coastal landscapes. Emphasis is placed on environmentally friendly practices, reflecting a comprehensive approach to active conservation.
