Origin and history
The garden of the Bouxwiller Hospital, classified as a historical monument since 1930, is located in the department of Bas-Rhin, in the Grand Est region. This garden, planted with grass and shaded by some trees, extends southeast of the hospital. It represents about one-sixth of the former seigneurial recreational gardens and half of the former leisure garden, which once included three terraces decorated with ramps, stairs, pavilions, fountains, water jets and many statues. Today, there are only three monumental statues of the early eighteenth century (Mercury, Bacchus and Apollo) and two carved fountains, moved to the back of the garden.
The octagonal pavilion, once present in the garden, has disappeared. This pavilion, of octagonal plan, was made of crepe wood, with bays in full hanger and eight wooden columns. Its cover was in a curved dome, and the ground was paved with pink and grey sandstone. The two fountains with carved basins and pillars decorated with a lion, as well as the three statues preserved on pedestals, are the only elements protected by the decree of October 16, 1930. The garden is now owned by a private company.
The site is located at 3 rue du Canal in Bouxwiller, although some sources also mention an approximate address at 5 Jardin des Seigneurs. Its conservation status and location accuracy are estimated to be poor (note 5/10). The protected elements specifically include the Fountain of the Romans fountain, the statue of Mercury and a trilobed basin fountain, inscribed since 1930.
