Origin and history
The Coutances Plant Garden is a historic monument located in the city of Coutances, Normandy. Created in the 3rd quarter of the 19th century, it embodies a typical example of public gardens under the Second Empire in Lower Normandy. This type of green space reflects the urban and social concerns of the time, aimed at embellishing cities and providing accessible walking places for all.
This garden is recognized as a prototype of the area's public gardens, illustrating the landscape and architectural trends of the Second Empire. It was entered in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 20 November 1992, indicating its heritage value. Owned by the municipality of Coutances, it retains all its original facilities, protected for their historical and aesthetic interest.
Located on Rue Quesnel-Morinière, the garden is part of the urban landscape of Coutances, a city marked by its medieval heritage and its administrative role in the English Channel. Although its exact location is considered fair (level 5/10), it remains an emblematic place of the city, open to the public. Its status as a Historic Monument makes it a valuable testimony to the development of green spaces in the 19th century in Normandy.
