Origin and history

The Jardin du Dauphin du Mont-Saint-Michel is a monument located in the emblematic commune of Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy. Although its name evokes a link to the medieval or Renaissance history of the site, the available sources do not specify its period of creation or its original use. His name suggests, however, a connection with the heirs of the crown of France, often referred to as "Dauphin".

Mont-Saint-Michel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has always been a strategic, religious and symbolic place. The gardens or green spaces associated with such sites were generally used for utilitarian purposes (culture of medicinal or vegetable plants), ornamentals, or as walking places for residents or pilgrims. In a medieval or modern Norman context, these spaces also reflected the social status of their owners and participated in the autonomy of monastic or seigneurial communities.
