Origin and history

The Exotic Garden of Monaco was designed by the engineer Louis Notari at the initiative of Prince Louis II. Opened to the public in 1931 and officially inaugurated in 1933, it was completed around 1938-1939. This botanical garden, specialized in succulent plants like cactus, comes from arid regions (United States, Mexico, Africa). After World War II, under the leadership of Louis Vatrican, he acquired a recognized scientific value.

The garden houses the Observatory's cave, discovered in 1950, a natural cavity decorated with stalactites and stalagmites, showing a prehistoric occupation. The objects discovered are exhibited at the Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology, inaugurated in 1960. This museum and cave reinforce the cultural and historical importance of the site, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

Built on a cliffside, the garden offers stunning views of Monaco and requires regular consolidation work, such as those undertaken in 2021 to secure the cliffs. Its management has been carried out by several directors, including Louis Vatrican (1935-1969), Marcel Kroenlein (1969-1993), Jean-Marie Solichon (1993-2018), and Diane Ortolani since 2018.
