Origin and history

The Prince Charles Gardens are integrated into the Montfort Hotel, a private hotel located in Senones, in the Vosges department. These gardens occupy an elevated platform, accessible by a red sandstone staircase built during the 3rd quarter of the 18th century. The wrought iron ramp, which also serves as a guardrail, highlights the elegance of the architectural ensemble.

In 1772, astronomer Charles Messier, famous for his research on comets, made observations. This historical detail highlights the link between this place and the sciences of the time. The garden also includes a curved basin, fed by a spring whose water springs from a carved fish, under a dome decorated with a shell.

Hotel Montfort and its gardens are protected as historical monuments. The hotel was partially classified in 1982, while the gardens were registered in 1991. Today, these spaces belong to the municipality of Senones and bear witness to the architectural and scientific heritage of the Vosges in the eighteenth century.
