First feudal age (vestiges) (Cases C 1421-1423): inscription by order of 17 February 1984

Origin and history

The habitat of the first feudal age of Jasseron is an archaeological vestige located in the commune of the same name, in the department of Ain, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Dated from the 10th and 11th centuries, this site illustrates the first forms of domestic and social organization during the nascent feudal period. The remains, although partially preserved, offer an overview of the typical lifestyles and constructions of this pivotal period between late Antiquity and the Central Middle Ages.

The site was recognized for its heritage importance and listed as historic monuments by order of 17 February 1984. This official protection underscores its archaeological and historical value, allowing its preservation for future generations. The remains, located precisely at the 27 Chemin des Maisons Rouges, are representative of the rural habitats that then developed in the French countryside, often linked to the farming and the emergence of local seigneuries.

In the 10th and 11th centuries, the Ain region, like much of Western Europe, was undergoing a period of major transformation. Feudal structures were in place, with the emergence of small centres of local power and a hierarchical social organization around lords and peasants. Habitats such as Jasseron played a central role in this dynamic, serving as a basis for agricultural communities exploiting the surrounding lands. These sites were often fortified or organized to meet the needs of defence and economic autonomy, reflecting the political and social uncertainties of the time.
