Origin and history
Jeanne Jugan House, located in Saint-Malo, is a malouinière built in the 1720s. Its architecture follows the classic model of the malouinières of the period, with a rectangular plane, a marked symmetry on the main facades, and a lack of superfluous ornamentation. The interior distribution, especially on the ground floor, also respects this typology, with well preserved decorative elements, such as marble chimneys, panelling and ceilings.
The property organizes between a courtyard and a garden, a typical arrangement of urban private hotels. It was registered as a Historic Monument by decree of 14 November 2013, thus protecting the house, the entrance gate, the courtyard and the garden. Today, the malouinière belongs to a private company, and its current use (visits, rental, accommodation) is not specified in the available sources.
The malouinières, characteristic of the Saint-Malo region, were often residences of rich shipowners or traders in the 18th century. These homes reflected the social status of their owners and also served as reception places. Jeanne Jugan House is a well-preserved example, illustrating the influence of classical architectural models in this coastal area marked by maritime trade.
