Origin and history

Lipsheim's manual lifting bowling game, located in the Lower Rhine in the Grand East region, is a historic monument registered since 2007. This vestige of the 20th century bears witness to a popular leisure once widespread in Alsace, where even the smallest municipalities had slopes, initially outdoors. The particular feature of this site is its manual bowling system, a technique that has become rare with the modernization of games.

Originally, the runway was installed outside, but was protected in the early 1930s by light wooden construction. This building, located at the 30th dead end of the railway station, retains the entire game system, including its period mechanism. The registration of historical monuments in 2007 helped preserve this heritage, a symbol of Alsatian fun and community traditions.

This set of bowls represents a unique example of immaterial tangible heritage, where modest architecture (a simple wooden structure) serves a collective use. Its ranking covers the entire site, including the track and its mechanism, highlighting its importance as a witness to the social and recreational practices of the 20th century in Alsatian rural areas.
